Wandsworth French Learners
First Steps Pathway
About This Pathway
First Steps Pathway The First Steps Pathway is a structured programme designed for primary school children learning French as a second language. It introduces the language in an immersive and engaging way while following the progression expected in the UK National Curriculum for modern foreign languages. Lessons are initially conducted mainly in English, with French introduced progressively as pupils become more familiar with the language. The programme begins in Key Stage 1 to establish early core skills and gradually develops pupils’ confidence and proficiency as they progress through primary school. Its aim is to help learners build a strong foundation in French, develop an early passion for the language, and enjoy an immersive, culturally rich learning experience—even while learning French as a second language. Rather than focusing only on memorising vocabulary and grammar rules, students grow their language skills through active learning, regular practice, interactive activities, and exposure to French culture. This immersive approach gives students a deeper, authentic understanding of the language from an early age. First Steps Pathway Highlights: 1.
